The digitalization of business operations has accelerated the demand for secure, transparent and resilient information systems. Traditional enterprise systems have historically been used effectively for automating business processes, however they are now facing increasing challenges with respect to the areas of data security, trust, interoperability and systemic resilience. Blockchain technology represents a disruptive and transformative innovation that has the capability to resolve these challenges by providing new ways to manage and transact data in a decentralized, immutable and transparent fashion. This literature review provides an analysis of the integration of Blockchain technology into enterprise systems and how it can be used to create secure enterprise operations; build economic resilience; and facilitate the transformation of industries. This literature review also analyses the current state of research related to blockchain-enabled enterprise architectures, the application of blockchain technology within key industries, as well as the advantages and disadvantages, governance and regulatory considerations, and emerging technology trends associated with blockchain-enabled enterprise systems. This literature review will provide an overview of how the integration of blockchain technology into enterprise systems is changing the way organizations operate and contribute to the transformation of their organizations.
